it was standing-room only last night at pontelungo for 2 big matches that both ended up being straights sets, but high-quality and entertaining. Congrats to the winner: BOGA!

Two more matches played today during this weekend of challenges, this time no spectators or coaches, just guttural screams (and racket-smashing!) of frustration and victory. Raymond/Gabriela (12) climbs into the top 10 after 2 months away due to injury by beating the intimidating giant Claudio/Sam (10) 6-3, 6-1. In the other match, a 5-2 early lead by Massimiliano/Ana in the first set was followed by an amazing comeback that ended in a so-so-close tiebreak finally won 8-6 by Svetlana/Francesco. Second set went to the Russian 6-2. Ivanovic was later penalized for skipping her press conference with a terse "No Comment." (She then quickly left the premises, forgetting to pay for her court! Thankfully, she later returned to avoid further WTA sanctions.) :-)

No change at the top of the rankings after Kim "Guido" Clijsters successfully defended her #2 position from a hungry Flavia "Riccardo" Pennetta. After a warm-up which featured some of the hardest-hitting the WTA has has ever seen, the first set went to Kim in a very fast 6-0, while the second set showed some real fight from a consistent Flavia and a battle of nerves from both sides which ended in tiebreak. However, after Kim went up 5-1, Pennetta was overheard saying to the chair umpire "It's over. I'm finished." And in fact, two points later a tired Pennetta blasted a forehand return into the net. Final score: 6-0, 7-6 (1) But with one week left of challenge matches, Kim is almost guaranteed to remain #2, while Flavia has at least three possible opponents looking to take her #5 position. Tomorrow: #19 Kvitova vs. #17 Graf at 20:30!!
